There are many reasons to pursue music, and each require a different approach to the learning process. However, there are certain constants such as core physical techniques, understanding of musical notation, and perceptive listening, that contribute to a student's success regardless of why they are pursuing music.
Breathing, embouchure, rhythm, and pitch are essential when playing the flute, and must be consistently addressed. More abstract skills, such as the ability to make artistic, genuine musical decisions in terms of rubato, dynamics, and timing, require inspiration.
