There are many reasons to pursue music, and each require a different approach to the learning process. However, there are certain constants such as core physical techniques, understanding of musical notation, and perceptive listening, that contribute to a student's success regardless of why they are pursuing music.
Breathing, embouchure, rhythm, and pitch are essential when playing the flute, and must be consistently addressed. More abstract skills, such as the ability to make artistic, genuine musical decisions in terms of rubato, dynamics, and timing, require inspiration. The more invested a student becomes, the more I desire to help them mature and grow confident in their unique musical voice.
As a teacher, my goal is help students enjoy and realize their potential in music, and provide the knowledge for improvement.
Identify areas of strength with which to provide encouragement for further growth and artistry
Develop awareness of detrimental habitual patterns and expand a student’s musical palette
Nurture a student’s inner drive to succeed by introducing them to masterfully crafted music
